The 2018 Rural Vista Heat football team welcomes new head coach Derron Reddick to the charge of the program.

Reddick, a native of Council Grove and a K-State graduate, comes to the Heat after spending four years at Council Grove and a season at Wamego as an assistant coach. This will be his first season as a head coach.

While at Wamego, he was charged with the junior varsity program while coaching wide receivers. His four years at his Alma-matter saw him coaching running backs and defensive backs.

“I believe our team had a great summer,” Reddick said. “We saw about 80 percent of our players throughout the summer come in and take steps to better themselves. Most of the kids in town were highly involved in football activities, as well as other activities in their communities.”

The 2018 team will be young. Reddick expects sophomores Dylan Worrell, Cameron Campuzano and Tom Van Valkenburg to lead the offense. Worrell is expected to call the plays under center while Campuzano and Van Valkenburg should see carries of the ball at running back and wing.

Junior Cody Meyer should anchor the offensive line and defensive line.

One of the season goals is to improve on the 4-5 record of a year ago. The coach wants his players to compete every night regardless of the opponent and because the team is young, Reddick wants to develop talent for the future.

Using the mantra of 1-0 attitude, Reddick wants the team to attack every play, assignment in the classroom and adversity in life with the attitude that we want to win that play and then move on to the next play.

Rural Vista opens the 2018 season this week at Wheat State League opponent Solomon.
