For the first time in the history of the Kansas State High School Activities Association, the state track meet had to be held over a three-day period in Wichita.

Following an initial weather delay of over two hours on Friday, barely five events into the schedule lightning and heavy rain forced the first of several evacuations of Cessna Stadium.

Friday’s call came late in the afternoon with the meet to resume early Saturday morning. With the delay, the meet was put into extra drive in hopes of finishing Saturday evening. Finals were eliminated from field events and prelims were cancelled on the track.

The meet restarted at 7:30 Saturday morning and progressed steadily throughout the day. With three running events remaining late Saturday afternoon, rain and lightning once again forced the very large crowd at the biggest outdoor track meet in the country.

The remaining two classes of 200M boys sprints and then the finals of the 4x400M relays had to be pushed back again. This time to take place Sunday morning.

A couple of field events needed to be completed and got a little earlier start on Sunday with the track events beginning at 11 a.m. Once again Mother Nature tested the patience of the contestants, workers and the fans with another stadium clearing interruption.

Finally, the remaining relay races were allowed to run, the field events concluded and tournament awards were presented several hours later and a day later.
