Chapman senior Rachel Duer is the lone returning letter winner for the Lady Irish tennis team in 2018.
Duer, an All-League first team selection in 2017 at singles, is expected to move to number one doubles this season. She finished last season with a 16-10 overall record.
“Rachel not only is our only returning letter winner from a year ago, she is our only returning varsity experience,” Chapman head coach Christal Ade said. “Over half of losses were to sate medalists, so she brings back a lot of experience and success to the court.”
Coach Ade expects Duer to team with senior Katelyn Reiff at the number one doubles team. Reiff is back after sitting out for two seasons due to injury.
“Katelyn was hampered with a knee injury, but is back and better than ever,” Ade said. “These two girls compliment each other well on the court and should be contenders at the end of the season.”
Second year head coach Ade believes this year will be a development year for Lady Irish tennis.
“Our strength this year is how hard we work,” she said. “We are a young team, but we had several girls working on skills this summer and improving their game. We just need to continue making the most of our time.”
Ade and assistant coach Genevieve Arveson will welcome back junior Elizabeth Morgan and sophomores Sophie Jones and Naliya Contreras.
“The girls are extremely coachable and eager to get experience on the court,” Ade said. “Experience is obviously an area we are lacking, but I’m looking forward to seeing the growth we make this year.”
The Lady Irish begin the 2018 season at home when they host the Chapman Quad at 3 p.m. on August 30.
