It was breezy, overcast but mostly pleasant day on Ken Russell Track in Abilene Friday afternoon that determined state qualifiers for the Class 4A Track Meet this week in Wichita.

Teams from KC Piper and Wamego finished first and second in both team divisions to take home school honors. Piper took the girls title with 105 points followed by the Red Raiders with 91. In the boys’ competition, Piper scored 117 points for the title with Wamego taking second with 97.

The competition was stacked at the Abilene regional as several state title contenders ran or threw at the Friday meet. Prior to the meet, five of the top six boy’s shot putters in the state were lined up to throw in Abilene. The same could also be said of other events during the meet including fast times in a contested 4x400M relay that Chapman placed first with a time of 3:25.44.

Abilene senior Sydney Burton defended her 2018 state title in the 800M with a 2:20.65 to finish ahead of two runners from Buhler and her teammate Abby Barnes. Barnes qualified for state with a 2:28.76. Burton’s winning time in Abilene was the best of the four Class 4A regional’s times with Barnes finishing in the top six times.

Burton finished second to Chapman sophomore Taylor Briggs in the 1600M run. Briggs set a new Irish school record with her 5:06.90 time while Burton established a new Cowgirl mark at 5:11.65 that broke a recorded time of 5:12.80 established in 1996.

Briggs also raced home with gold in 3200M. She ran 11:36.93 and will look to defend her state title in Wichita.

Junior McKenna Kirkpatrick took home gold in triple jump and also a new Chapman High School record of 36-11. Her new personal best was the best qualifying mark in the class for the upcoming state meet.

Abilene’s Preston Boyd tossed the shot 51-08 but couldn’t qualify at the Abilene meet because of the four tosses ahead of him on the day. Boyd’s mark would have won two other regional meets.

Cole Sample, a junior from Tonganoxie, threw 61-10.5 to win the shot put competition followed by Piper’s Cooper Beebe at 58-04.50 and Lemoses White at 52-04.75. Hayden’s Evan Prohaska edged out Boyd and Chapman’s Kel Stroud with a toss of 52-02.

Abilene’s Kylie Coup had a career day in shot put capturing the title with a toss of 34-00.75. Chapman’s Macy Bliss was third. Bliss also qualified in discus.

In hurdles, Cowgirl Beth Holmes finished first in 300M with a 46.80 mark. That time would put her in the top three at this week’s meet.

Cowboy Dylan Scherbring will run in both the 100M and 200M dashes for Abilene.

Chapman’s Aaron Modrow won three individual gold medals Friday with winning times in 800M, 1600M and 3200M. He goes into the state meet looking to do the same.

Abilene’s Cowgirl 4x400M relay team of Beth Holmes, Abby Barnes, Savannah Stout and Sydney Burton will have another chance to establish a new school record. They won the regional at 4:11.87 but will need to be under 4:07.3 in Wichita.

Irish junior Peyton Suther will take a regional title to state in javelin after a toss of 129-00 and she jumped second in high jump at 5-00.

Abilene nearly swept the pole vault as the Cowgirls finished first, second and fourth. Senior Zoe Cooper brought home gold with a leap of 9-06 followed by junior Makenna McGivney at 9-00 and junior Shiann Olberding was fourth at 8-06.

Chapman senior Mitchell Tiller won the boys pole vault at 12-06.
