CHAPMAN – The Chapman Lady Irish softball team rallied from early deficit to defeat the Buhler Crusaders 4-2 in regional first round action Monday in Chapman.
With Buhler scoring in the first and third innings, Chapman rallied with a single run in their half of the third and then tied the game with a run in the fifth before pushing two across in the sixth for the win.
Savannah Cavanaugh had a hot bat for the Lady Irish as she collected three hits during her three trips to the plate. Senior Alexandra Hoelscher had a two-hit, two RBI game for Chapman. Jessie Switzer also had a pair of hits for the Irish.
Hoelscher started on the circle for Chapman and was charged with one earned run on three hits. She struck out three during her time on the bump.
Senior Rachel Duer tossed the last four innings collecting the win. She held Buhler scoreless on one hit. She struck out two and walked one.
Emma Willison took the loss for Buhler as she was charged with two earned runs on 10 hits through six innings. She walked one and struck out one.
Chapman’s Tierra Martin hit into a sixth inning fielder’s choice that drove in the go-ahead run for the Irish.
Ashlynn Bledsoe, Emma Elliott and Ketelyn Reiff had singles for Chapman in the win.
With the win over Buhler, Chapman (4-14) now advances to regional play Wednesday at Andale. They will meet up with the number one seed Andale/Garden Plains team that is 19-1 on the year.
The winner of that contest will then play the winner of Winfield (11-9) vs. Towanda-Circle (10-10) to earn a trip to the state tournament in Salina.
In the other Class 4A West division play-in game on Monday, Ulysses (5-13) defeated Mulvane (0-18) 16-6 and will head to Augusta to play the Lady Orioles (19-1) in a three o’clock game. The winner will matchup with either Topeka-Hayden (11-7) or Wellington (7-11).
