HESSTON – The Abilene Junior Babe Ruth baseball team blew past Hesston for a double-header sweep Friday night in Hesston.
Abilene took the opener 19-10 in three innings and then slammed the home team 21-2 in the nightcap.
In the first game, Hesston scored eight times in the bottom of the first to take an 8-3 lead only to have Abilene come back and score seven in the second for a 10-8 advantage. Hesston tied in the game in its half of the second but Abilene rallied with nine runs in the third for the big win.
Stewart Scott smacked three hits for Abilene including a triple that drove in runs. He also scored twice. Kaleb Becker had two hits, a double and a triple, to drive in two and score three times.
Sam Burton drove in four runs with a pair of hits and Karsen Loader doubled to score three. Braden Wells and Ayden Taylor also had hits for Abilene.
Wells relieved Braden Adams on the hill to get the win. Wells allowed one earned run on three hits over one and two-thirds innings. Burton tossed the final frame with a strikeout.
In the nightcap, Abilene scored seven times in its opening at bat and then added five in the second, two more in the third and another seven in the top of the fourth in the romp.
Adams and Loader had two hits for Abilene. Loader and Taylor each had two RBI. Becker doubled to drive in a run. Wells doubled while Michael McClanahan, Brady Fitzgeralds and Taylor also had hits.
Taylor was the winning pitcher for Abilene as he was charged with two unearned runs on two hits through four innings. He walked four and struck out four.
Abilene was aided by four defensive errors by Hesston and their pitchers threw 16 wild pitches and hit two batters.
Abilene moves to 4-0 on the year after the sweep of Hesston followed two wins over Salina.
