BELOIT – The Abilene Cowboy baseball team got their first win of the season with a 14-6 victory over Beloit Friday afternoon in Beloit.
Abilene rallied for a huge win by scoring five runs in the sixth and seventh inning to notch its first win of 2019 in the opening game of a non-conference double header.
Trailing 1-0 after two, the Cowboys pushed across three runs in the third and added a single run in the fourth for a 4-1 lead. Beloit drew closer by adding two runs in the fifth before the Cowboys exploded for five huge runs in the sixth.
Beloit came back to add a run in the its half of the sixth but Abilene answered with five more in the seventh and then held the Blujays to two runs in the seventh for the win.
Senior Bret Ambrosier was credited with the win as he tossed a complete game and was charged with two earned runs on nine hits. He walked two while striking out six.
With two outs in the Cowboy third inning, Ambrosier walked and advanced to third on a single by Kaden Coup. Ambrosier scored on a passed ball that moved Coup to second. Carter Taplin followed with a base on balls and he and Coup stole a base. Robbie Keener was plunked by the Beloit pitcher to load the bases and Keaton Hocker drew a walk that pushed Coup in for Abilene’s second run of the inning.
Abilene’s next batter Cody Mohn was also hit that scored Taplin to give the Cowboys the 3-1 lead.
In the Cowboy sixth, Jayshaun Jones slashed a single to left and after stealing second scored on a double by Ambrosier. Coup reached on an error and then scored on a double by Taplin. Kenner drove a ball over the fence to score Taplin and himself and the Cowboys led 9-3 after five and a half innings.
Coup and Jones had three hits for Abilene while Keener, Hocker and Ambrosier had two each. Keener had three RBI with Taplin accounting for two. Ambrosier, Coup, Hocker, Mohn and Jones had one RBI each in the Cowboy win.
Karsen Loader also had a hit in the Cowboys 15-hit attack.
Beloit scored four times in the sixth inning of game two for an 11-6 win.
The Cowboys now 1-15 will host Chapman on Tuesday.
