Whiteley run

Cowboy senior running back Dakotak Whiteley (11) gets the blocking junior Kade Funston (56) and senior Preston Boyd (44) to get a nice gain on a sweep in the opening quarter against Pittsburg-Colgan.

The Abilene Cowboys halted their three-game losing streak with an impressive 22-20 win over state ranked Pittsburg-Colgan Friday night on a neutral site at Towanda-Circle High School.

The Cowboys rallied in the second quarter to tie the game with a touchdown run by Dakotah Whiteley and then they capitalized on a two-point conversion pass play from Kaleb Becker to Preston Boyd to take an 8-6 lead into the third quarter.

Cowboy quarterback Jackson Randles capped a 12-play Abilene drive midway through the third period with a seven yard scoring run to put Abilene in front 14-6 going into the final period.

Pittsburg-Colgan capitalized on the first offensive play in the final 12 minutes with a 97-yard scoring run by Matthew Lomshek to draw within two at 14-12.

Randles completed a fourth down an 18 yards to gain pass to Boyd for a Cowboy score at the 4:14 mark and James Mayden made it just past the goal line on the two-point attempt to give Abilene a 22-12 advantage.

Pittsburg rolled off four first downs in a row and scored on a 27-yard touchdown pass and a two-point conversion to pull with 22-20.

The Cowboy defense controlled the ball and the clock to end the game for an Abilene win.

Abilene improves to 2-3 and will travel to Coffeyville next week.
