William “Bill” Bowen Crabtree Jr., formerly of Highland, died Saturday morning, June 15, 2013, at Memorial Hospital in Abilene.
Bill was born Sept. 12, 1920, the son of William Bowen and Zella Constance Gilmore Crabtree. After his mother’s death on the day he was born, he was raised by his aunt and uncle, Ida and Earl Low in Robinson.
He attended Highland High School graduating in 1938. He married Mary “Jane” Ukena on Dec. 30, 1945. They lived in Highland nearly all of their married life until moving to Abilene to be near family in 2008. She died Jan. 15, 2012.
He worked at the Ukena Hardware Store in Highland, eventually becoming a partner. He was also a sales rep for KNZA Radio FM, Hiawatha, and Byrd Memorial, Atchison. He became director of Ambulance Services in 1989.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 66 years and his parents. He is survived by his five daughters: Connie Blanton of Ellinwood, Linda Etherington of Abilene, Sue Martin of Baldwin City, Kathy Hopp of St. Joseph, Mo., Amy Gard of Topeka; 12 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren.
A celebration of Bill’s life is planned for 11 a.m. Saturday, June 22, at the Highland Christian Church, with Pastor Jason Kohler officiating. Burial will be at the Highland Cemetery.
Friends may call at Chapel Oaks Funeral Home in Highland after noon on Friday, where the family will meet with friends from 6 until 8 p.m.
