HEBRON, Neb. –– Clara Mae Lawson of Hebron, NE the daughter of Eli H. and Eulalia (Bell) Houtz was born November 28, 1913 at Abilene, KS. She departed this life Friday June 7, 2013 at Blue Valley Lutheran Nursing Home in Hebron, NE at the age of 99 years.
She was baptized and attended the First Methodist Church in Talmage, KS and also their high school.
In 1933 Clara joined the Job-Seekers and went to Denver, CO. She left with a one-way train ticket, the promise of work and maybe $5.00 a week. She drew a Jewish family of five to work for, $5.00 a week plus room and board. Wanting more money and better work hours, she changed jobs frequently. Her jobs included maid service, invalid care, family bakery, commercial bakery, and the munitions plant.
In 1943 she joined the United States Navy Waves. After boot camp at Hunters College she was stationed at Wave Quarters D and I in Washington, D.C. Having spent most of her time in the bake shop she was discharged in 1946 with a Second Class Bakers rating.
She enrolled for Dress Design at The American Academy of Arts in Chicago, IL. After 18 months she knew she would never be a professional designer she returned to Denver University and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in 1950.
In January of 1951 she was hired by the University of Nebraska Cooperative Extension Service and was accepted by the Thayer County Board where she served until 1978.
She married Clarence Lawson in 1969 and inherited three boys and one girl.
Travel without doubt was Clara's hobby number one, she also enjoyed refinishing furniture, decorating, yard work, making quilts, spinning, weaving, genealogy, reading, and flowers.
She is survived by thee step sons, Robert Lawson and wife Fran of Taos, New Mexico, Arthur Lawson and Paris, TX, and Craig Lawson of Brandon, MN, one step daughter Catherine Knickerbocker and husband Kal of Tallahassee, FL, nieces, nephews and friends.
Following Clara's wishes her body was donated to The Nebraska Anatomical Board. A memorial service will be Friday June 14, at 2:00 pm at The Presbyterian Church in Hebron, NE. Officiant will be Pastor Connie Stone, congregational hymns “How Great Thou Art” and “Amazing Grace”, inurnment of cremains will be at a later date in Abilene, KS, memorial in care of her family, condolences may be left at www.krollfh.com, Hebron Memorial Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
