HERINGTON – Despite the small numbers of wrestlers on both teams, the Chapman Irish and the Herington Railers competed in a dual Thursday. The Irish had a few more wrestlers than the Railers did, therefore there was a lot of open wrestling spots that gave the Irish some easy match victories. There were only six matches and the Irish won three matches, and had the opens, to the dual, 54-34.
“For the first competition back from the long break,” Chapman coach Jeff Sheets said, “they wrestled really well. They were a bit rusty and do need to work to get ready for Saturday and the rest of the season.”
The Railers had three wins; Daniel Melcher, who defeated Peyton Lott in the first round by a pin. Trever Melcher defeated Keanan Crane in the third period 18-2 with just a few seconds left in the match by tech fall. And Kaleb Gillis defeated Dustin Lister by pin in the third period with .39 seconds left.
For the Irish, Robert Steck was the first to wrestle at 126 pounds, due to the open weights before him. Steck pinned Taylor Cook in the first period. The Irish’s Stone Hayden also pinned the Railer Tanner Schneider in the first period. And the final wrestling win for the Irish was Zack win, who defeated Taylor Nuss by pin quickly in the first period.
The Railers and the Irish wrestlers will see each other on the mats again on Saturday when Herington hosts their annual wrestling invitational. Abilene, Bluestem, Central, Chapman, Chase County, Council Grove, Halstead, Hillsboro, Jefferson West, Onaga, Remington, Wamego, Wabaunsee and hosting Herington will all be attending the meet Saturday.
