CHENEY – The morning after having to take to shelters for possible protection from tornadic weather conditions in the Wichita area, the Wichita Collegiate Spartans and a hundred other Class 4A state qualifying golfers took to the links of the Cherry Oaks Golf Course in Cheney, Monday.
Collegiate won the state title with a team score of 299 and had their four players finish in the top 15 of the state individual rankings.
Iola’s Kaden Macha took home the gold medal after a playoff with Collegiate’s Cameron Chugg as they both shot a 72 on the day.
Abilene’s lone state qualifier senior Jacob Harms placed in the middle of the pack of 106 golfers with an 84 (43-41).
“Jacob had a great year, I know he wanted to score better, he just could not get it going,” Coach Mark Willey said.
“He hit the ball pretty good. Cherry Oaks has some big greens that he struggled with,” Willey added.
“He was actually seven over par after 13 holes and then made a couple of bad swings,” coach Willey said.
“Jacob has had a nice career, his scoring average of 80.6 last year placed him 36 all-time in Abilene History,” coach Willey added.
The top 12 team scores were Collegiate 299, Kansas City Piper 305, Topeka Hayden 316, Buhler 316, Paola 320, Independence 325, Hesston 325, Andale 331, Bonner Springs 332, Altamont-Labette County 334, Larned 335 and Iola 335.
Individual results for the 2013 state tournament were Macha 72, Chugg 72, Montana Fasching of Kansas City Piper 72, Charlie Rinehart of Piper 73, Gage Ihrig of Goodland 74, Dominic Lara of Towanda-Circle 74, Drew Sanburg of Tonganoxie 74, Ethan Holiday of Holton 74, Laike Walters of Paola 74 and Steven Amrrein of Topeka Hayden 75.
