JUNCTION CITY –– Verl F. Longhofer, 91, former Abilene resident passed away on Monday, Dec. 31, 2012, at the Valley View Estates in Junction City. He was born April 27, 1921, in Dickinson County, the son of Sam E. and Goldia (Smith) Longhofer.
Verl was a lifelong resident of Dickinson County. He attended school at Stoney Hill, a one room school south of Abilene, and graduated from Dickinson County High School, Chapman in 1938.
On May 19, 1942, he married Lois N. (Linder) Longhofer. She survives of the home. Other survivors include two daughters, Patricia Tomlin of Bonner Springs, and Debra Welsh of Junction City; eight grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren, nine step-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren; one brother, Garland Longhofer of Hutchinson, and one sister, Vesta Bowyer of Goodwin, Mo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, Lloyd Longhofer; his daughter, Carol Ann Petrie and one grandson, Keith Riffel.
Verl was an Army veteran of World War II. He was a farmer, stockman and hog buyer for Linder Livestock until retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Ebenezer Baptist Church of rural Abilene and was baptized in Turkey Creek on his folk’s farm. While a member of Ebenezer he served many years as a trustee, on the advisory board and building committee. He also served on the Navarre Co-op Elevator Board, Jefferson Township Board and Rural Center School board during the time the elementary school was built.
Verl was an avid sports fan all his life. He played baseball and was drafted by Joplin Miners of the Western Association and later to Fond du Lac, Wis. League team under the guidance of the New York Yankees. The major leagues did not work out for Verl but he had no regrets. He continued his love for sports by coaching his three daughters play softball and attending his grandchildren’s sporting events on a regular basis. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
Family will receive friends from 6:30 to 8 p.m., Thursday Jan. 3, at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral home of Abilene. Funeral Services will be 1:30 p.m., Friday, Jan. 4, 2013, at the Ebenezer Baptist Church, rural Abilene with pastor John Wiebe officiating. Burial will follow at the Abilene City Cemetery.
