LINDSBORG – The Chapman Lady Irish softball team dropped their first round 4A Regional game to the number two seed Rock Creek Mustangs 13-6 at the Bethany College softball complex Monday night.
Morgan Beemer took the hill for the Lady Irish and pitched three and two-thirds innings allowing 11 runs on 10 hits striking out one and walking one batter and she was touched for two wind aided Mustang homers.
Abby Sweet relieved her in the fourth inning.
“We had two bad innings on the mound. We were not able to hit spots and made a couple of mistakes with location,” Chapman Coach Jeff Beemer said.
Rock Creek’s Blair Campbell was credited with the win pitching seven innings and allowing six earned runs and 14 Irish hits.
The game was never in doubt after the first, as Rock Creek scored four runs on a two-run double by Alexis Wilson and two singles.
The Lady Irish scored in the top of the third helped Chapman Irish Varsity close its deficit to 4-1. An RBI double by Daryan Weis triggered the comeback.
“We hit the ball fairly well. We had some girls step up at the plate. We just built too much of a deficit to overcome,” coach Beemer said.
Chapman scored two runs in the top of the fourth with an RBI single by Jesse Heiman and an RBI single by Gillian Farley to spark their rally.
Rock Creek matched the Lady Irish strong inning with a seven-run inning of its own in the fourth.
They scored on a solo home run by Lauren Overkamp, an RBI single by Kayla Boltz, a two-run single by Kelsey Quinn, a steal of home by Winter Henry and a two run homer by Wilson.
The Irish answered with two runs in the top of the sixth on an RBI single by Vanessa Lovett and an RBI double by Ashley Hansen.
Weis was two-for-four with an RBI and run scored and Macey Langvardt went three for four with an RBI while Paige Altwegg and Farley both two hits each for Chapman in the game.
“I give Rock Creek credit, when we made a mistake they made us pay for it,” coach Beemer concluded.
The Irish finished the season with a record of 9-10 and it was the last game of their high school softball career for Laura Thurlow, Rachel Hengemuhle and Megan Watson.
