CHAPMAN –– George "Elmer" Shry, a resident of rural Chapman, KS, passed away at his home Monday, May 13, 2013 at the age of 77.
Elmer was born September 1, 1935 at the family farm northwest of Chapman, KS. His parents were Lawrence Henry and Grace Ellen Spencer Shry. He attended Spring Valley, a country grade school, and he graduated from Chapman High School with the Class of 1953. Elmer and his brothers participated in the rodeo circuit.
He was married to Shirley Ann Case at Marion, KS in 1966. They lived in various places due to his construction work with Meyer Construction. They moved to Chapman in 1967, and he worked as a welder at Vacu-Blast in Abilene, KS, and at Frohardt Garage in Chapman. He worked as a Deputy with the Chapman Police Department, and he served with the National Guard. They moved to the family farm, northwest of Chapman, in 1994. He was an avid hunter--hunting snakes to bears.
He is survived by his wife Shirley of their home; one son Terry Lynn Shry and his wife Nicki of Chapman, KS; three daughters: Debra K. Weber and her husband Rick of Salina, KS, Becky R. Chaffin and her husband Tony of Salina, KS, Jeanna L. Plante and her husband George of Salina, KS; eleven grandchildren and four great-grandchildren; three brothers: Robert S. Shry and his wife Mary of Gore, OK, Kenny E. Shry of Emporia, KS, Denny D. Shry and his wife Terri of Overbrook, KS.
He was preceded in death by his parents Lawrence and Grace, one son Kevin Ray Laber in December of 1997, one granddaughter Milissa Norman, and three brothers: Wayne Shry, Morris Shry, and Clifford Shry.
Funeral services will be held at the Londeen Funeral Chapel, 206 W. 5th in Chapman, KS on Friday, May 17, 2013 at 10:00 A.M. Pastor Rick Shry will officiate. Burial will be at the Sutphen Mill Cemetery.
The Londeen Funeral Chapel will be open for visitation from Thursday afternoon, May 16, from 2:00 P.M. till 7:00 P.M. Memorials may be given to the Leukemia Society of America. Memorials may be sent to the Londeen Funeral Chapel, Box 429, Chapman, KS 67431.
