Most of the entries in the North Central Kansas League Track and Field meet were seing “Red” Friday; that being the back of a Wamego Red Raider jersey.
The Wamego Red Raiders took command early and ran away with team victories in both the boys’ and girls’ divisions at the Ken Russell Track.
Wamego scored 209 team points in the varsity boys’ competition and was followed in second place by Marysville with 89. Abilene scored 72 point to place third followed by Concordia’s 64, Clay Center 56 and Chapman 55.
The Lady Red Raider’s were convincing in their victory as well. Wamego scored a team leading 172 points followed by Concordia 136, Marysville 103.5, Chapman 59.5, Abilene 58 and Clay Center 17.
The Raiders’ took first place in six of the 15 individual events and two of the four relays in the boy’s division. They finished second place in the other two relays.
The Lady Raiders won four of the 15 individual events and one of the four relays.
Brady Moore of Marysville had a trifecta in individual gold medals as he placed first in the 100-meter dash (10.89), 200-meter dash (22.71) and 400-meter dash (49.93).
Wamego’s Isaac Poe claimed first place in both of the hurdles races at 110-meter hurdles (15.04) and 300-meter hurdles (43.13). Red Raider Clay Peyton scored two wins in the long jump (20-0.25) and triple jump (39-10.5).
Abilene’s Marcus Gonzales won two gold medals for the host team Cowboys. Gonzales took first in the high jump (5’10) and the javelin throw (147-0).

In the girls’ division, Wamego’s Elizabeth Evans claimed two gold’s in the shot put (37-7.75) and the discus (124-8) and Concordia’s Megan James took home gold in two events, pole vault (10-1) and long jump (15-5.25) as the only dual winners.
“The weather was great and all over the place I was seeing improvements from our athletes,” Chapman Coach Michelle Elliott said following the meet.
Chapman’s Carlie Phillips broke her own Chapman High School record in the 100-meter dash with a first place time of 12.32.
“Carlie once again showed a quality performance in the 100-meters. She once again broke the school record with her run in the pre-lims of 12.32,” coach Elliott said.
“I was very proud of our team to season bests at the league meet,” coach Elliott concluded.
Abilene’s Krista Bacon and Chapman’s Milea Anderson were dual medalists in the girls’ hurdle events. Anderson placed second in the 300-meter hurdles (49.21) and Bacon placed fourth (50.51).
In the 100-meter hurdles Bacon was second (16.67) while Anderson finished third at (16.74).
