Russell Milton Reiff, 32, of Abilene died Monday, May 6 at his residence in Topeka, KS where he lived while attending Washburn University.
Russell was born Dec. 22, 1980 at Abilene Memorial Hospital in Abilene, KS. He attended Rural Center Grade School and graduated from Chapman High School in 2000.
After graduating from Chapman High School, Russell attended UTI classes in Houston, Texas. After graduation he worked for an Audi dealer in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Russell moved to Topeka where he worked at Heartland Park while attending classes at Washburn. While working at Heartland Park, Russell joined the Kansas National Guard. In the seven years he was a member of the Kansas National Guard, he served three deployments as a combat medic. He was deployed to Iraq, Egypt, and Djibouti, Africa. Between deployments he attended Washburn University, working on a degree in public relations.
After serving three deployments and achieving the rank of Sergeant, E-5, Russell returned home where he was honorably discharged September 2012. Russell was the kind of serviceman who felt a great responsibility for the men and women he served with. Many of them addressed him as “Doc”. It was not necessary for him to do a third deployment but he volunteered out of a feeling of responsibility for those men and women he had both trained and worked with while serving his country.
He is survived by his parents, Dan and Marla (Strunk) Reiff, Abilene; one brother Ryan Reiff and wife Jennifer (Engelland), three nieces; Macy, Laney, and Addyson Jo Reiff; all of Buhler, Kansas; grandparents Marvin and Joan Reiff, Abilene; aunts, uncles and cousins. He is also survived by many friends all of who loved him deeply and will miss him greatly. His grandparents Marvin and Shirley Strunk preceded him in death.
Funeral services will be held; 2 p.m. Saturday, May 11th at New Basel Church, 1075 1100 Ave. Abilene, KS. Visitation will be 5:30 to 6:30 p.m. Friday, May 10th, at the Danner Funeral Home, 501 N. Buckeye, Abilene, Kansas. Inurnment will be at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials in his name be given to the Wounded Warrior Project in Russell’s honor or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
