COUNCIL GROVE – The Abilene Cowgirl softball team coming off of two-conference double-header sweeps in the last week split with the Council Grove Braves in a non-conference encounter before the regional tournament next week.
Aldyn Wildey helped carry the Cowgirls to a 4-3 victory in game one with a strong performance at the plate and on the mound.
Wildey pitched eight innings and allowed three runs (2 earned) while striking out six.
The Cowgirls took an early 1-0 lead in the third inning when Wildey, who went three-for-three, singled to open the inning.
Hailey Devine singled hard to the infield advancing Wildey to second.
Shay Hoekman then singled to right field to score Wildey and advance Devine to second.
Carly Gassman singled to center to load the bases and Michaela Olberding hit a fielder’s choice to the third baseman that threw out Divine at the plate to end the inning.
Council Grove tied the game 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth.
The Cowgirls regained the lead in the sixth when Michaela Olberding reached on an error and scored on an RBI double by Jenna Klein.
Klein advanced to third on a ground out by Shelby Mascareno and then scored on a single by Wildey for a 3-1 Cowgirl lead.
The Lady Braves tied the game again in their half of the six and after not scoring in the seventh the game went into extra innings where the Cowgirls scored the winning run in the top of the eighth.
“We were tied 3-3 at the end of the 1st game and had to go into extra innings,” coach Koochel said.
Michaela Olberding doubled to left and scored on a double by Wildey to score Olberding with the winning run and a 4-3 Cowgirl victory.
Wildey set down the Braves in order in the bottom of the eighth to preserve the win.
Wildey drove in two runs with her three hits. Hoekman had two hits and a RBI for the Cowgirls too.
“ All in all the girls played well enough to win the first game, but came out a little flat in the second game,” Coach LouAna Koochel said.
Mallory Olberding took the mound for the Cowgirls in game two and pitched four innings allowing eight runs on eleven hits as the Council Grove bats came alive in the nightcap for an 8-2 victory.
“During the second game Council Grove hit the ball well and we did not. Council Grove had 11 total hits and we had five,” Koochel said.
“We committed two errors and they didn’t have any in the second game,” coach Koochel concluded.
Wildey pitched the final two innings for the Cowgirls and did not allow a hit or an additional run to score.
Offensively for the Cowgirls, Klein, Mascareno, Wildey, lake and Devine each had a hit in the game. Mascareno and Lake accounted for the RBI’s.
