CHAPMAN – The Abilene Cowboys have another North Central Kansas League trophy to display as the Cowboy tennis team took top honors at the league tournament in Chapman.
“This was a great day of tennis for us. It was a total team effort in winning our sixth straight NCKL title,” Coach Garry Stredney commented following the tournament.
“The wind was a big factor and I think our kids adjusted well,” he said.
Matthew Barlow remained undefeated on the season and won the No. 1 singles player gold medal for the Cowboys.
“Matthew won three matches to run his season record to 26-0,” coach Stredney said.
Gabe Johnson, Abilene’s No. 2 singles player, also went undefeated in the NCKL tournament taking home the gold.
“Gabe had three nice matches for us. He is 21-4 on the year,” coach Stredney said.
Kaynan Anderson and Connor Kijowski, the Cowboys’ No. 1 doubles team, were perfect on the day and took top honors in this division.
“Kaynan and Connor won the No. 1 doubles with three big wins and they are 23-3 on the year,” Stredney said.
The No. 2 doubles team of Reggie Koop and Tyler Schiffner finished 2-1 on the day and brought home the silver medal for the Cowboys.
“Reggie and Tyler had their best tournament of the year,” he said.
“They are much more consistent than they were at the beginning of the season,” Stredney concluded.
Team scores for the tournament were: Abilene 28, Marysville 20, Concordia 7 and Chapman 5.
