BELOIT – The Abilene Cowboys’ baseball team spilt a non-conference double header with the Beloit Trojans Friday in Beloit.
Hunter Combes took the mound for the Cowboys in game one and gave up four runs on three hits while striking out six and walking one in a 4-3 Beloit victory.
Cowboy second baseman Chase Stalder was one-one with a run scored and an RBI along with two walks in the opener.
The Cowboy offense could only muster another hit against the Beloit pitcher in the first game.
Catcher Carson Sherbert opened the top of third inning with a lead off single to right field.
Senior Nolan Berry would toe the rubber for the Cowboys in game two. He would allow eight runs on nine hits, striking out 11 and walking four batters to gain his fourth victory of the season in a 10-8 Cowboy victory.
‘Hunter and Nolan threw great on the night,” Cowboy Coach Travis Bartley said,
“That’s two starts in a row from those that have been great,” he said.
“Defensively, we weren’t to bad except for the two costly throwing errors we had at the end of the first game that cost us the game,” Bartley added.
Grant Pritchard led the Cowboy offense in game two by going three-for-four with two runs scored and driving in two runs. Berry helped his cause by going one-for- three while scoring twice and drive in another Cowboy run.
“We struggled most of the night at the plate. In the first game we just couldn’t get anything going and in the second we had some timely hitting with runners in scoring position,” coach Bartley said.
“I am a little disappointed in how we dropped the first one but we found a way to earn a split.” he concluded.
The Cowboys are 7-7 on the season and take on Council Grove Tuesday at Council Grove.
