In a joint effort between the Abilene area Toys for Tots, the American Legion Auxiliary Post #39 and the Abilene Police Department, some lucky youngsters will receive bikes for Christmas this year.
Abilene Police Chief Mark Heimer said that the unclaimed bicycles in Abilene are given to the area Toys for Tots program. Toys for Tots and the American Legion send the unclaimed bikes to the Ellsworth Correctional Facility.
Inmates there will refurbish the bikes and send 50 back to Abilene.
Toys for Tots Chairman Cindy Issitt said the bikes are stored in Abilene and sent to Ellsworth at Christmas time.
“It’s great to see these bikes get refurbished rather than just rust away,” Heimer said. “They will go to some deserving kids.”
This is the second year of the partnership headed by police officer Cecil Doris.
