Blanche Geisert Brooks
LINCOLN, Neb. –– Blanche Geisert Brooks, 90, died April 23, 2013 in Lincoln. Nebraska. She was born April 1, 1923, on a farm fifteen miles south of Abilene, Kansas, to Frederick Jacob and Martha Elizabeth Geisert (Lauer). She earned her B.A. in English at McPherson College, McPherson, Kansas, and her M.A. in English Literature at the University of Chicago. Between college and graduate school, she taught high school English for one year in Kingman, Kansas. She married Rev. Norman F. Brooks on August 31, 1947.
Norman and Blanche served Congregational and then United Church of Christ churches in Lyonsville, Illinos; Oakland, Iowa (1949-60); Osage, Iowa (1960-67); Crete, Nebraska (1967-71); Fond du Lac, Wisconsin (Plymouth [1971-79], St. Mark’s [975-79], Pilgrim [1979-81]); Harvard, Nebraska (1981-86); and as an Interim in Nelson, Nebraska (1987-89), retiring in Lincoln in 1986.
Blanche spent her life as a Christian educator, musician, and parent. She was an accomplished pianist and also enjoyed singing in church and community choirs. She was active in the League of Women Voters, PEO, and as a Christian Education specialist, also directing children’s choirs at several churches. She was recognized nationally in the United Church of Christ for her contributions as a Christian educator.
Blanche instilled in her children a passion for music, reading, history, and nature. Summers always included camping in beautiful natural settings and visiting historical museums and other sites. She believed in the power of the individual, with the help of God, to make a lasting difference in the world, and she exemplified that commitment throughout her life. Her stories, joy in living, and laughter created a warm and loving home.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister-in-law, Maureen Gish Geisert, and is survived by her husband, three brothers: Wayne (Maureen), Bridgewater VA; Theodore (Alice), Kingman KS; Leon (Marge), Osceola MO; three children: Rev. Janet E. Brooks, Stanfordville NY; Timothy M. Brooks, Townsend WI; and Barbara B. Hart (Carl), Columbus NE, and by four grandchildren: Elizabeth Gelehrter (David), Daniel Thoemke Hart (Christine), and David and Rachel Brooks.
A Celebration of Life will be held at Vine Congregational United Church of Christ, 1800 Twin Ridge Road, Lincoln, Nebraska, on May 4 at 11 A.M. Interment will be at New Basel United Church of Christ, rural Abilene, Kansas, at noon on May 5. Memorials may be made to Vine Congregational United Church of Christ.
