Betty Lorene McVicker
Betty Lorene McVicker, 83, of Abilene, Kansas, passed away Thursday, April 25, 2013 at Memorial Hospital in Abilene. She was born August 5, 1929 at Longford, Kansas, the daughter of Guy and Marie (Runnalls) Ferguson. She grew up in Longford and graduated from Longford High School. After graduation she taught at country schools and attended college at Kansas State University. On October 5, 1950 she was united in marriage with John H. McVicker in Longford. He preceded her in death November 17, 2009.
They made their home in Herington, Kansas where Betty worked for the Herington Press in the early 1950’s. They moved to Abilene in 1959 where she worked for McKinley School from 1960 to 1963. In 1963, she went to work for ASCS as a clerk until retiring in 1990. After her retirement Betty kept busy working for the Greyhound Hall of Fame and volunteering at the Eisenhower Museum. She and John enjoyed traveling to Branson, to the World’s Fair in Knoxville, Epcot Center, Mount Rushmore, and made a WW II reminiscence trip to France and Austria.
Betty was an active member at the Emmanuel Methodist Church in Abilene; a member of the Abilene Chapter of Eastern Star; and a loyal member of NARFE where she served several terms as Secretary/Treasurer and President.
Surviving are two daughters, Marilyn Laricks and husband Jim of Dallas, Texas and Pamela Eyler and husband Jerry of Brentwood, Tennessee; Three Grandchildren Lauren Eyler and partner, Dawn, Leslie Eyler, and Johnathan Eyler. Sister-in-law Marie McKisson. Nieces and nephews: Steve Ferguson, Vearl Ferguson, Pat Boyd; Linda Huss, Janice Walters, Darrel Ferguson, Jim Ferguson; Morris, Mike, Mark, and Marshall McVicker.
She was preceded in death by her parents, brothers Dean and Carol Ferguson, and husband John.
The family will receive friends at Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home in Abilene on Sunday, April 28, from 2:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. A Memorial Service will be held on Monday, April 29, at 2:00 p.m. at the Funeral Home with Pastor Shane Britt officiating. Private inurnment will be held at the Abilene City Cemetery. The family of Betty Lorene McVicker suggests friends may leave memorials to the Emmanuel Methodist Church or the Village Manor of Abilene in her memory.
