SALINA – The Abilene Cowboy tennis team competed in the Salina South Tournament on Friday originally scheduled for Thursday, due to the Kansas spring weather.
The Cowboys finished third place among the eight schools competing.
“The boys played well overall,” Coach Garry Stredney said.
Cowboy senior Matthew Barlow, who was seeded number one in the singles bracket, won four matches to go undefeated and win the tournament.
Barlow defeated Cody Brown of Hays 8-0, Patrick McClunskey of Great Bend 8-1, Cowboy teammate Gabe Johnson 8-1 to advance to the finals against the second seed Umberto Rossetto of Salina Central, whom he defeated 8-0 for the championship.
“Matthew had a great tournament,” Stredney said.
Johnson, the Cowboy’s No. 2 singles player, finished fourth in the tournament (2-2) by defeating Will Bochete of Smoky Valley 8-1, Dustin Hayes of Manhattan 8-2 before losing to Barlow and then losing to Nick Moyers of Great Bend in the consolation game 8-2.
‘Gabe played very well for us and ended up fourth overall,” Stredney said.
Abilene’s No.1 doubles team of Kaynan Anderson and Connor Kijowski finished fourth in the tournament losing to a doubles team from Salina South 8-7, 7-4 in the consolation bracket.
The Cowboy’s No.2 doubles team of Reggie Koop and Tyler Schiffner went 0-3 for the day by losing to Great Bend in the first round 8-0, Smoky Valley in the second round 8-5 and finally to Hays 8-3.
Team scoring: Salina Central 59, Great Bend 53, Abilene 50, Andover 31, Salina South 31, Manhattan 28, Hays 16 and Smoky Valley 12.
