CLAY CENTER – In between rain showers the Abilene Cowboys squeezed in a make up game with Clay Center Monday. The Cowboys split a North Central Kansas League double header in Clay Center on Monday.
This pair of games were originally scheduled for April 9th but rescheduled to Monday due to the spring weather conditions.
Junior Chris Cease took the mound for the Cowboys in game one and pitched the first three innings allowing three Clay Center Tiger runs in the 5-4 Clay Center win.
Chase Stalder relieved Cease to finish the game on the hill for the Cowboys.
“Offensively we couldn’t get it going,” Cowboy Coach Travis Bartley said.
The Cowboys had five hits in the opener.
“For the most part I was happy the way we threw and played defensively,” Bartley said.
“We had two costly errors that Clay Center took advantage of. We came out flat to start the game and we just got flat out played by Clay Center,” he said.
Right fielder Chad Beetch singled in the top of the second, stole second and scored on a single by Tanner Hoekman.
Nolan Berry led off the fourth with a walk, advanced to third on a double by Beetch and scored on a Tiger error.
Berry and Beetch scored in the Cowboy sixth to close the gap to 5-4, Tigers.
Clay Center’s third pitcher of the game was able to keep the Cowboys off base in the top of the seventh to preserve the Tiger victory.
The Cowboys struck back in game two scoring 15 runs in three innings and allowing only one Tiger hit in a 15-0 three-inning game.
Berry took the mound for the Cowboys in the nightcap and pitched two innings of no hit ball. He struck out three Tiger batters.
Logan Meuli, making his first appearance for the varsity, pitched the third inning striking out one and not allowing a Clay Center run.
“Clay Center’s pitchers had trouble finding the zone and we just took advantage of the free passes,” coach Bartley said.
The Cowboys had seven hits and took advantage of eight walks, two hit batsman and four Tiger errors to push across the 15 runs.
