The Abilene Cowboy tennis team hosted the Abilene Invitational Tennis Tournament Tuesday afternoon at the Abilene High School tennis courts and the courts in Eisenhower Park.
“This was a great tournament for us, it had lots of good competition,” Abilene Coach Garry Stredney said.
Senior Matthew Barlow, No. 1 singles player, who is undefeated on the season, led the Cowboys in the tournament.
Barlow had a 3-0 score in the tournament.
“Matthew had a huge win in the finals. He beat Tommy Hunter of Topeka Hayden 8-2. Hunter is one of the top players in 4A,” Stredney said.
The No. 1 doubles team of Kaynan Anderson and Connor Kijowski also had a 3-0 record for the tournament by defeating Hayden in the finals 8-1.
“Kaynan and Connor played very well in sweeping the No.1 doubles title. They are 13-1 on the season,” he said.
Gabe Johnson, the Cowboy’s No. 2 single player had a bye in the first round and then defeated Mendez of Ellsworth 8-2 and Sprague of Concordia in the finals 8-4.
“Gabe had two nice matches in winning the No. 2 singles title. He is really improving,” Stredney added.
“We got three first place finalist and a second in the tournament,” Stredney said.
The second place finish came from the No. 2 doubles team of Reggie Koop and Tyler Schiffner, who lost to Hayden 8-3 in the finals.
Team scoring for the tournament: Abilene 34, Hayden 28, Concordia 14, Ellsworth 13, Hays 11 and Chapman 2.
The Abilene varsity is scheduled to play in the Salina South Tournament Thursday and then at Junction City on Saturday.
