The 8th Annual Free Christmas Dinner will be held at the Abilene Elk's Club on Christmas Day.
Thanks to Kenny and Cindy Ryan and a group of volunteers, the free Christmas dinner will be held from 3 to 6 p.m. Christmas Day at the Elks Lodge in Abilene.
And for those that can’t get out, meals can be delivered.
“Anybody who wants to come for a meal or just to visit (is invited),” said Kenny Ryan. “It's kind of a town thing. There are lots of people that don’t have relatives. They come down and visit with people that also don't have relatives.”
Ryan said most would be surprised at how many people don’t have relatives or friends with whom to spend Christmas.
The traditional Christmas dinner will consist of turkey, stuffing, mashed potatoes and gravy, corn, rolls and plenty of dessert for everyone.
The dinner started when the Ryans' daughter Samantha was attending Abilene High School.
She started the event as her Senior Project.
“Her intent was to do it for people who couldn’t afford a meal or didn't have family,” Ryan said. Two years later, their daughter Megan did the same Senior Project. “We now open it up to anybody that wants to come in. More people are starting to realize it.”
Kenny and Cindy, greyhound owners who live just west of Abilene, have since taken on the free dinner.
