Cowboys sweep South in tennis
SALINA – The Abilene Cowboys’ tennis team swept the Salina South Cougars in a dual meet Saturday, at Oakdale Park in Salina.
“Our team played great in this dual,” Cowboy coach Garry Stredney said following the meet. Number one singles player Matthew Barlow defeated JD Warren 6-0, 6-0 to begin the dual.
Kaynan Anderson won over Zach Koshgarian 6-2, 6-0 in the number two singles match. Connor Kijowski defeated Seth Allen 6-0, 6-0 in the number three singles set. Number four singles player Gabe Johnson defeated Caleb Daugherty 6-1, 6-0. Abilene’s Reggie Koop defeated Ethan McCary 6-0, 6-1.
Cowboy Tyler Schiffner defeated Duy Nguyen 6-1, 6-2 to complete the Cowboy sweep of the singles matches.
Anderson and Kijowski, Abilene’s number one doubles team defeated South’s Allen and McCary 6-0, 6-0.
Barlow and Johnson teamed up to defeat Warren and Koshgarian of South 6-1, 6-0.
Abilene’s third doubles team of Koop and Schiffner beat Daugherty and Nguyen 6-0, 6-2 to complete the Cowboy sweep of the dual.
“Our players served well and returned serve well and those were two things we needed work on,” coach Stredney said.
“Our players also gained a lot of confidence from the dual and we will need it with three tough tournaments this week,” Stredney concluded.
The varsity will play host to the Abilene Tournament, Tuesday and then return to the Salina South Thursday before heading to the Junction City Tournament on Saturday.
