HILLSBORO –– Katherine “Katie” Penner, 100, died April 4, 2013, at Hillsboro Community Hospital, Hillsboro, KS.
She was born September 9, 1912, near Clinton, Washita County, OK, to Peter E. Nickel and Elisabeth Froese Nickel, the youngest of 12 children. She was a member of the Herold Mennonite Church near Clinton. She married Dan S. Hiebert on April 2, 1938, and transferred her church membership to First Mennonite Church in Hillsboro, KS. Dan died February 28, 1957. She married Harry Schmidt on January 2, 1960. Harry died May 26, 1966. On February 14, 1976, she married Paul M. Penner, who died June 17, 1982.
She was a farmer and stockman, and also worked at Salem Home for the Aged and Tabor College as a night cook for many years. She was a gracious hostess and loved to quilt and embroider. She had lovely flower gardens. She moved to Hillsboro and in recent years moved to Park Village Congregate at Parkside Homes, spending the last ten months at Parkside Homes.
Preceding her in death were her parents, all of her siblings and her husbands. She is survived by her sons: Robert (Eddie) Hiebert of Abilene; Paul (Marilynn) Hiebert of St. Louis, MO; Charles (companion Letty Fleetwood) Hiebert of Alexandria, VA; Larry (Karen) Penner of Newton; Mary (Albert) Beck of Velva, ND; ten grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and extended family.
A memorial service will be held at First Mennonite Church, Hillsboro KS on Wednesday, April 10, at 11:00 a.m. Burial will precede the service at Haven of Rest Cemetery east of Hillsboro. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to The First Mennonite Church, or a memorial of choice, in care of Jost Funeral Home, 401 S. Washington, Hillsboro, KS 67063.
