Harriet Ellen Stott Zernickow was born July 28, 1925, at the Stott homestead near Navarre, KS, the only daughter of Earle and Mabel Homler Stott. She died Saturday, April 6, 2013 while being treated at Salina Regional Health Center.
She attended the Pearl Union #1 School and graduated from Chapman High School in 1943. She was an active member of the Navarre Church of the Brethren where she accepted the Lord at the age of 12. After the unexpected death of her father in 1943, Harriet and her mother moved to Abilene, KS. She transferred her Church membership to the Evangelical United Brethren Church (now Emmanuel United Methodist Church) where she was active in all aspects of the Church. She held various offices in United Methodist Women and was Sympathy Committee Chairman for over 30 years. Memberships included Church Women United, VFW auxiliary, over 30 years with American Legion auxiliary, Past Matron of Eastern Star and was the music director for Job’s Daughters for over 25 years.
Her community volunteer efforts also included significant involvement with the Abilene Area Food & Clothing Pantry, Abilene Memorial Hospital, Dickinson County Historical Association, Smoky Valley Railroad and Republican Women. She received many awards for her dedicated service.
She was a very optimistic person and greeted others with a smile. She often said, “the happiness and love one gives to others comes back in double measure.” When reminded by others about how busy she always seemed to be her usual response was, “ I would rather wear out than rust out.” She enjoyed doing sewing handwork that she passed on to friends and family. Family was very, very special to her.
On August 6, 1944, Harriet married Paul Zernickow of Chapman at the home of her mother at 425 NE 8th St., Abilene. KS and lived at that location for 50 years. Paul died August 24, 1994. The marriage union produced to sons, Clyde (Chuck) and Kent. Survivors included Chuck (wife Sandy), Kent (wife Karen), Grandsons Craig (wife Debbie), Chad (wife Tina), Sean (wife Amanda), Robert, Richard and Daniel. Great grandchildren include Trevor, Kelsey, Gabrielle (Gabi), Amelia (Meli) and Payson. Harriet also cherished her surviving relatives and a host of friends.
Services for Harriet will be 2:30 p.m. Friday, April 12, 2013 at the Emmanuel Church with Pastor Shane Britt officiating. Visitation will be from 5:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Thursday evening at the church. Harriet’s final resting place will be in the Abilene Cemetery. Memorial contributions can be made to Elsie Brooks Cancer Fund, Abilene Area Food & Clothing Pantry, Dickinson County Historical Society and Emmanuel United Methodist Church and may be sent in care of the Martin-Becker-Carlson Funeral Home, 414 NW 3rd, Abilene, Kansas 67410.
