The expectations for the Abilene Cowboy golf team this season are very high. It is coming off a very successful season last year.
The Cowboys are the defending North Central Kansas League champions, finished runner–up in the Holton Regional and the team qualified for the state tournament.
Coach Mark Willey returns four lettermen to this year’s team.
Seniors Jacob Harms and Thomas Cooper along with sophomores Ryan Kreutzer and Justin Carroll are expected to lead the team this season.
“Jacob had a great year last year and brought home many individual medals and led us in scoring last year averaging 80,” said coach Willey.
“He is a consistent player and should even be better this year,” added coach Willey.
“Thomas is capable of good rounds. We expect him to be more consistent and have a great year,” he said.
“After a good freshman season, we expect Ryan to play even better this year. He has looked good in early qualifying,” said coach Willey.
“Justin had a solid freshman season, he works hard and should keep improving,” he added.
Current roster members include Harms, Cooper, Kreutzer, Carroll and seniors Norman Anderson, Michael Koehler, Duncan Spangler and Layne Shiffner.
Juniors on the roster include Lance Westfall, Cade Rosalez and Kinsey Ford.
Other sophomores include Andrew Minson, Elliott Gassman and Dalton Goodwin.
Freshmen newcomers Marcus Willey and John Cooper will add depth and competition to the roster.
“Marcus has played well in early qualifying rounds. He is an experienced player (summer KGA events) and is capable of playing well,” coach Willey concluded.
Abilene’s season begins Tuesday at the Wamego Country Club.
