CHAPMAN – The Fighting Lady Irish softball team will be looking to improve on their season from a year ago with new Head Coach Jeff Beemer beginning his first season as head coach.
Coach Beemer will look to the leadership of eight returning lettermen to guide the Irish this season.
Senior Laura Thurlow, juniors Paige Altwegg, Morgan Beemer, Faith Decker, Vanessa Lovett, Rachel Sutter and sophomores Brittany Duer and Ashley Hansen will lead the Irish women in hopes of improving on their sixth place finish in the North Central Kansas League.
“Defensively we should be fairly solid, we have a couple of pitchers that throw fairly well,” said coach Beemer.
“The key for us will be offensive production. We need to score runs,” he added.
“We will have competition at every position this year which could should make us better,” said Beemer.
The Irish have eight freshmen currently on their pre-season roster.
“We have some freshmen coming in this year that have some abilities. We need them to be able to make the adjustments from 14- year- old ball to 18 -year -old ball. The game is much faster at the varsity level,” added coach Beemer.
Seniors Laura Thurlow, Megan Watson, Megan Peterson, Rachel Hengemuhle, Caitlin Davis, Alicia Brown, and Seria Bomia will be expected to provide the leadership for the Irish ladies.
Juniors Paige Altwegg, Morgan Beemer, Faith Decker, Vanessa Lovett and Rachel Sutter along with sophomores Brittany Duer, Ashley Hansen, Christina Hoffman, Baylee Ramey and Cheyenne Sacher will welcome freshmen Gillian Farley, Mia Gaumond, Kelsi Gilbert, Caitlyn Hartung, Jessie Heiman, Macey Langvardt, Abby Sweet and Daryan Weis to the team.
“We had a tough time last year. We’re on the bottom looking up. I expect that not to be the case this year but the NCKL is a tough league. Everybody throws hard with movement. We will find a way to compete at this level,” concluded coach Beemer.
Beemer will be assisted by assistant coach Mindy Krinhop this season heading into their first game March 26th versus Clay Center.
