The Abilene Cowboy wrestling team qualified five wrestlers for the State 4A Wrestling Tournament in Salina next weekend following the regional tournament in Abilene Friday and Saturday.

Logan McDowell (106) finished in second place, Zane Baugh (113) won the regional, Jr. Morgan (120) placed first, Seth Strauss (132) finished in second place and Jacob Hagedorn (152) qualified by finishing fourth.

106 - Logan McDowell (32-6) placed 2nd and scored 20.00 team points.

Champ. Round 1 - Logan McDowell (Abilene) 32-6 won by pin over Zachary Voelker (Larned) 5-17 (Pin 0:45)

Quarterfinal - Logan McDowell (Abilene) 32-6 won by pin over Brenton Edwards (Concordia) 4-11 (Pin 0:40)

Semifinal - Logan McDowell (Abilene) 32-6 won by decision over Tanner Gastineau (Goodland) 31-7 (Dec 7-5)

1st Place Match - David Mainus (Colby) 34-3 won in double overtime over Logan McDowell (Abilene) 32-6 (2-OT 3-2)

“Logan McDowell wrestled a great weekend. He had a two-overtime final match against David Manius from Colby, after taking down a very tough Tanner Gastineau of Goodland in the semis and earned his first trip to the state tournament. He had a really good regional and hopefully will bring home a state medal next week,” commented Coach James Stout.

113 - Zane Baugh (30-7) placed 1st and scored 23.50 team points.

Champ. Round 1 - Zane Baugh (Abilene) 30-7 received a bye

Quarterfinal - Zane Baugh (Abilene) 30-7 won by pin over Nathan Nelson (Chapman) 13-20 (Pin 5:11)

Semifinal - Zane Baugh (Abilene) 30-7 won by tech fall over Aaron Avelar (Goodland) 33-11 (TF 15-0)

1st Place Match - Zane Baugh (Abilene) 30-7 won by decision over Justin Pool (Holton) 31-6 (Dec 6-0)

“Zane Baugh won his second straight regional wrestling title and is just a sophomore. Coming back from a third-place finish in the state last year, he had a nice, pretty dominating performance in the finals today,” said coach Stout.

120 - Junior Morgan (33-2) placed 1st and scored 23.00 team points.

Champ. Round 1 - Junior Morgan (Abilene) 33-2 received a bye

Quarterfinal - Junior Morgan (Abilene) 33-2 won by pin over Randall Thomas (St. George-Rock Creek) 25-15 (Pin 1:51)

Semifinal - Junior Morgan (Abilene) 33-2 won by major decision over Simon Munoz (Topeka-Hayden) 13-6 (Maj 19-8)

1st Place Match - Junior Morgan (Abilene) 33-2 won by decision over Hunter Price (Holton) 35-5 (Dec 10-7)

“Jr. Morgan had an outstanding tournament, possibly in the deepest and toughest weight classes in the tournament. Overall, he is a two-time state place wrestler wrestling against another two time state place winner in the finals and dominating the match,” coach Stout stated.

132 - Seth Strauss (37-6) placed 2nd and scored 22.00 team points.

Champ. Round 1 - Seth Strauss (Abilene) 37-6 won by pin over Jaden Payeur (Concordia) 2-10 (Pin 0:19) Quarterfinal - Seth Strauss (Abilene) 37-6 won by pin over Kenny Knoll (Topeka-Highland Park) 16-14 (Pin 2:50)

Semifinal - Seth Strauss (Abilene) 37-6 won by pin over Brook Bahe (Goodland) 20-9 (Pin 4:52)

1st Place Match - Kyle Wilson (Wamego) 31-1 won by decision over Seth Strauss (Abilene) 37-6 (Dec 6-2)

“This is another pretty deep weight class. Seth goes up against the returning sate runner-up from Wamego, a senior, and Seth is just a sophmore. He still earned his second shot at the state tournament. He is in a pretty good place to win himself a medal next weekend,” coach Stout said.

152 - Jacob Hagedorn (17-5) placed 4th and scored 17.00 team points.

Champ. Round 1 - Jacob Hagedorn (Abilene) 17-5 won by pin over Keenan Edwards (Concordia) 10-25 (Pin 0:27)

Quarterfinal - Mason Baum (Holton) 31-11 won by pin over Jacob Hagedorn (Abilene) 17-5 (Pin 1:46)

Cons. Round 2 - Jacob Hagedorn (Abilene) 17-5 won by injury default over Alex Singer (Topeka-Hayden) 13-7 (I-D 0:00)

Cons. Round 3 - Jacob Hagedorn (Abilene) 17-5 won by pin over Dylan Campbell (Wamego) 19-13 (Pin 0:55)

Cons. Semi - Jacob Hagedorn (Abilene) 17-5 won by pin over Kyle Ryan (Lindsborg-Smoky Valley) 24-16 (Pin 1:16)

3rd Place Match - Mason Baum (Holton) 31-11 won by pin over Jacob Hagedorn (Abilene) 17-5 (Pin 2:51)

“Jacob Hagedorn has only been able to compete with us during the second semester, so he was short on matches and mat time, but physically he’s got the tools and it is really nice to see him be able to punch his ticket into the state tournament,” added coach Stout.

“It is always sad as a coach during regionals with the roller coaster ride that a tournament brings especially for your senior class. We did have Nick Ward that went out with an injury, but he battled. He showed a lot of guts and moxy there and battled with the best he had to work with and I’m really proud of him for being just as tough as nails.

“Johnathan Todd, in the heavyweight, was a state qualifier last year but didn’t quite make it this year. It was a topsey turvey match with Kaiden Reed of Larned. Jacob could have made it in last night, but with the 1-0 decision loss to Jason Zook of Chapman he was forced into the consolation semis,” Stout said.

“I want to congratulate those guys, seniors, on a great season and great careers and we have the most respect for those guys. Wish they were with us, but these are some of the highs and lows as a coach in any kind of competition,” concluded Stout.
