SOLOMON –– Lyle Robert Engle, the first born of Robert M. and Esther (Upton) Engle, was born Friday, Oct. 8, 1926, in their home in Enterprise.
He served on the USS Saugus LSV IV, which carried troops to invasion fronts and casualties to rear areas. Lyle received an honorable discharge on June 12, 1946, as a Coxswain V-6 USNR at Norman, Okla.
He worked with Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a lineman.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Darlene, his sister, and his parents.
Lyle is survived by his daughters Sharon Engle Brewer of Dallas; Karla and husband Bill Johnson of Solomon; Jerri and husband Paul Drummond of Minneapolis; son Lynn and wife Patty Engle of Westminster, Colo.; brother Roy M. Engle of Valley Center; 10 grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren, and one great-great- grandchild.
The family will receive friends from 7 to 8 p.m. Tuesday evening at the funeral home.
Services will be 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 13, 2013, at the Yoked Presbyterian Church in Solomon. Military graveside services provided by the United States Navy Honor Guard will be in 2:30 p.m. Wednesday the Roselawn Cemetery in Salina.
Memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Salina, the Senior Center in Solomon, or to the Freedom Honor Flight of Kansas for Veterans and may be sent in care of the Carlson-Becker Funeral Home, 208 W. 4th, Solomon, KS 67480.
