The Abilene Cowboys wrestling team got the best of the Chapman Fighting Irish in a North Central Kansas League dual match, 54-18, Thursday night.
“This was our last regular varsity wrestling dual before regionals, and with Chapman, they always bring their best and our kids gave it their all,” said Abilene Coach James Stout following the match.
It was senior night for Abilene, recognizing the seniors for their accomplishments throughout their career as Cowboy wrestlers. Honored were: Jr. Morgan 120, Brandon Rein 126, Matthew McClanahan 145, Nick Ward 160 and Johnathan Todd at 285.
“We’re still young and have lots of things to work on and I think this dual exposed some things that we have to work on, even with the matches that we won,” added coach Stout.
Morgan 120, Caysen Smith 126, Seth Strauss 132, and Ward 160, all won their matches with pins for the Cowboys.
Chapman wrestlers Zack Witt 170, Dustin Lister 220 and Jason Zook at 285 won by pinning their Cowboy opponents.
“Over all, I thought we wrestled fairly well,” said Irish Coach Jeff Sheets.
“There were a lot of tough matches that didn’t go our way. The few that we won, I was pleased with the way the kids wrestled, especially Dustin Lister, as it was his first win of the season and that will probably pick him up a little bit,” added coach Sheets.
“Probably the biggest match was the last one of the night between Jason Zook and Johnathan Todd. These two have been ranked in the state throughout the year and I thought it would be a very tough match. Of course, I am very happy with the way it ended,” Sheets said.
“Jason has been wrestling very well this year, and right at this moment, I think he is the only freshman ranked at 285 in the state,” concluded Sheets.
Both coaches were anxious for Regional’s next week, Friday and Saturday in Abilene. Both agreed there would be some really good matches and it would be tough to get through the regionals and onto state.
