Funeral services for Robert L. “Bob” Whitworth, age 87, of Abilene, will be 10 a.m. Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church in Abilene with Pastor Ron Bowell and Pastor Annie Ricker officiating. Mr. Whitworth passed away Friday, Feb. 1, 2013, at his home in Abilene.
He was born May 21, 1925, in Abilene, the son of Ivan and Ethel (Garten) Whitworth. He graduated from Abilene High School and was the first “Cowboy Joe” at Abilene High School.
Bob worked for the Abilene Chamber of Commerce, the Ponca City Chamber of Commerce, Salina Chamber of Commerce, and the Ottawa Chamber of Commerce before retiring and moving back to Abilene. He served his country in the United States Army during WWII in Germany.
He was a member of the First United Methodist Church , the Army National Guard, Army Reserves, the VFW, American Legion in Abilene and was a 32nd Degree Mason.
On Dec. 27, 1943, he married Jean Ann Tinkler in Ft. Benning, Ga.
Survivors include his son Jeff Whitworth of Abilene; daughter Jill Dutton of Parker, Colo.; grandchildren Bobby Dutton, Kelsey Dutton, Amy Meysenburg, Kaysie Morris; great grandchildren Cody Wyckoff, Cooper Wyckoff, Cayden Wyckoff, Camden Morris, and Chase Morris.
Bob is preceded in death by his loving wife of 66 years, Jean Ann who passed away Feb. 15, 2012. He is also preceded in death by his brother Glen, sister Lois, and his parents.
Bob’s final resting place will be in the Abilene Cemetery with military honors provided by the United State Army Honor Guard. Friends may sign the register book after 5 p.m. Sunday and the family will receive friends from 6:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. Monday evening at the funeral home.
