While it was snowing outside, inside the Abilene gym it was raining 3-point baskets.
Unfortunately the 3’s were being made by the Wamego Red Raiders in the North Central Kansas League victory over the Abilene Cowgirls 76-35.
The Raiders jumped off to an early lead in the first period with an 11-0 run before Abilene Coach Janelle Geist could get a time out.
The Cowgirls scored their first basket at the 4:22 mark by Kurstin Guy to make the game 16-2.
Belle Barbieri added a jumper to cut the lead 16-4.
But the Raiders went on to score eight points in the final two minutes of the first quarter to lead 25-6.
The second quarter was much like the first period with Wamego scoring 25 points to Abilene’s 13 to lead at halftime 48-19.
Wamego’s sister act of Kaylee and Lanie Page scored 27 and 16 points respectively in the contest, while Lakyn Rowden added 15. These three players combined for 9 of the 12 Wamego three point buckets.
“They are really good physical team. They have height and some great shooters,” commented coach Geist at the end of the game.
The Class 4A second ranked Wamego Red Raiders go to 5-0 in the NCKL while Abilene drops to 3-3.
Next up for Abilene is another NCKL game at Marysville on Friday.
