Anna Mary Engle

Anna Mary Engle, a resident of Abilene, Kan., passed away at Sterling House I in Abilene, Kan., on Sunday, Jan. 27, 2013, at the age of 89.

Anna was born Aug. 19, 1923, at Mercersburg, Pa. Her parents were George and Lizzie Wenger Meyer, and Anna was the second of six children. She attended Elementary School in Mercersburg, and she graduated from high school at Messiah Academy. She attended Messiah College for one year, and then she worked at Bell Telephone in Harrisburg, Pa.

On Sept. 1, 1948, she married Hiriam Eldon Engle and they moved to Kansas in 1949. They lived and farmed northeast of Abilene in the Moonlight Community. Anna cooked at the Blue Ridge School for 30 years, and she retired as the Head Cook. She and her husband moved to Abilene in 2006. She was a member of the Zion Brethren In Christ Church, and she helped with various activities at the church.

She is survived by her husband Eldon in Abilene; one son Phil Engle and his wife Carla of Dallas, TX; one daughter Ruth Houghton and her husband Carroll of New Cambria; three grandchildren: Mitch Engle and his wife Carissa, Ben Houghton and his wife Amanda, and Erika Catron and her husband Danny, five great-grandchildren:

Estella Engle, Evelyn Engle, Joshua Houghton, Caleb Houghton and Derek Catron; one sister Edith Lesher and one brother Ed Meyer. She was preceded in death by three sisters: Dorothy, Pauline, and Clara.

Funeral services will be held at the Zion Brethren in Christ Church, Hwy. 15 and Hwy 18 north of Abilene, at 1:30 p.m. on Thursday, January 31, 2013. Pastor Jay Johnson and Ron Bowell will officiate. Burial will be at the Belle Springs Cemetery, south and east of Abilene.

The family will have a visitation with friends at the Church from 11 a.m. until noon Thursday, Jan. 31.

The Londeen Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Memorials may be given to Zion Brethren in Christ Church and/or Gideon's International. Memorials may be sent in care of the Londeen Funeral Chapel, Box 429, Chapman, KS 67431.
