Pauline Hill Murphy
Pauline Hill Murphy, 91, died Friday Dec. 14, 2012. She was born on April 23, 1921, in Rochelle, Ill., the daughter of Ralyn M. Hill and Iva Fern Rock Hill.
The family moved to Dickinson County in 1929. Pauline graduated from Abilene High School in 1939 and St. Joseph Hospital School of Nursing in Kansas City, MO.
She graduated as a registered nurse on May 31, 1942. Pauline married Charles J. Murphy on Oct. 4, 1942.
To this union five sons were born: D. Michael (Barbara) Wichita, J. Patrick (Ann), Charles R. (Barbara) Manhattan, Timothy L. (Elaine) El Dorado, Mark A. (Joan) New Strawn, Kan. There are 16 grandchildren and 23 great grandchildren.
Pauline was a member of the Trinity Lutheran Church, the Lutheran WELCA group, and a Sunday school leader. She was an active member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the American Red Cross.
Pauline was the Abilene Public School Nurse for 34 years. She also worked part-time at the Abilene Hospital.
Her family has a long history of service to the United States and Dickinson County. She was proud of her father’s military service and his Medal of Honor from WWI. Her father was a mail carrier and postmaster in Dickinson Co. for many years.
Her husband Charles was a farmer in Dickinson Co. and grandson of a Civil War veteran who was one of the pioneers and early sheriff of the county. Charles died March 10, 1989.
Pauline was also preceded in death by her parents and sisters, Shirley Patterson and Mary Ellen Reynolds.
Friends may call after 5 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the family receiving friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Wednesday.
Funeral services for will be Thursday, Dec. 20, 2012, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Abilene with Rev. Stephen Haverlach officiating. Burial will be in the Abilene Cemetery.
