The Hope High Lions football team rolled to its sixth straight win of the season with a 48-0 home victory Friday night against the Burrton High Chargers. The game was ended at the 7:55 mark of the third quarter with implementation of the 45-point rule.
The Lions were highly-favored against the winless Chargers, but got off to a slow start. Hope Head Coach Jeff Hostetter attributed this to the damp weather conditions and temperatures hovering in the mid-30s.
It wasn’t until the 8:32 mark of the first quarter that the Lions were able to score when Ty Wood broke across the goal line on a 16-yard pass play. A PAT run failed.
The touchdown followed a Burrton fumble that Hope recovered on their 34-yard line with 9:32 left in the opening quarter. It was the second possession for the Lions after they had fumbled the ball away at the 10:18 mark of the first period.
Hope quarterback Adam Adkins broke loose with 1:48 left in the quarter and galloped 38 yards for the Lions second score of the contest. A second PAT run failed.
The home team settled into a rhythm during the second period, and scored 30 points.
Trevor Hostetter tallied two touchdowns, while Adkins and Wood added one apiece. The Lions also were able to convert on three of four PAT attempts.
Hope held a commanding 42-0 lead at halftime.
The Chargers lost possession of the ball at midfield in the early minutes of the third period.
On the second play from scrimmage, Adkins connected with Dustin Davidson on 33-yard pass play that resulted in a touchdown. The 45-point rule was implemented and the game was ended.
Davidson, a senior lineman, had told Coach Hostetter earlier in the season that he hoped to score a touchdown during his last season with the Lions’ football program. And with his team in clear control of the contest, the head coach gave Davidson the opportunity. It wasn’t a pretty catch, with the senior bobbling the ball before gaining solid possession, but he crossed the goal line for the game-ending TD.
“Every lineman wants to score a touchdown,” Coach Hostetter said after the game, a chuckle in his voice.
Adkins led the Hope ground attack with 77 yards on seven carries. Trevor Hostetter followed with nine totes for 67 yards. He also logged 45 yards on three receptions.
Adkins completed 6 of 12 passes for 145 yards. Wood was the top receiver with two catches for 67 yards.
Davidson paced the Lions’ defense with 16 tackles. Tate Riedy and Trace Hostetter added 11 tackles apiece.
Hope is scheduled to travel to Tescott this coming Friday. The Trojans are 3-4 for the season and are coming off a 50-0 loss to White City this past Friday.
