The Abilene Middle School eighth grade football team won the North Central Kansas League title by going undefeated after winning 20-6 at Marysville Tuesday.
“Undefeated NCKL champs is pretty cool,” coach Mark Willey said. “This was a tough game, a total team effort.”
Marysville found the end zone on its first drive of the game for a 6-0 lead.
The Longhorns came back on two-yard run by Trey Hoerner to tie the game at the end of the first period.
The second quarter saw Hunter Sprouse score on a 35-yard run for the Longhorns and a Jase West pass to Bryce Riekman for a two-point conversion made the score 14-6 at the break.
The Longhorns iced the game in the fourth quarter on a Hoerner four-yard run for the final score 20-6.
“Our quarterback was out, we needed everyone to step up and play well to win,” Willey said. “Once again, our offensive line was very good and the defense played great after the Marysville score.”
“What a great season,” Willey said. “These guys learned to play hard every play and to work together as a team.”
