Name of staff member: Karen Stuber
Position in USD #435: Library/Keyboarding at McKinley
Years in this position: Starting fifth year
What brought you to Abilene? My husband, Greg, works at Russell Stover Candies here in Abilene. After our first child, Caleb, was born I quite my job in Salina and moved to Abilene to be closer to Greg’s job. We also like the idea of raising our boys in the Abilene community. After our boys reached school age, I started substitute teacher in the district. When I was in high school we had an excellent typing teacher, so when the opportunity came available for the keyboarding position, I knew it would be a good fit for me. I also have a two-year secretarial science degree from Tabor College and a Bachelor Degree in business from Wichita State.
A couple of years later the library position became available and what a fun job to expose kids to books. It is always a great moment when kids are really drawn into a book.
Sometimes they laugh out loud. Some of my favorite books to read to the kids are interactive stories where the kids can participate. It is also rewarding to introduce a new book series to see the kids select books from the series at checkout time.
The kids at McKinley are at such a fun age. They are always glad to see you, love to share what is on their mind that day and willing to help in any way they can.
