The AMS 7th and 8th grade volleyball teams won the North Central Kansas League Tournament in Chapman Saturday.
This is second league title in a row for the Longhorns.
The 8th grade team entered the tournament with a 3-2-league record. The losses came to Concordia early in the season and split with Wamego.
The third seed Longhorns faced Clay Center in the first match of the day winning, 25-6, 25-10.
“I was so proud of how well the girls played,” coach Jade Koch said.
Jaden Walters had 14 service points with six aces, three kills and six assists. Jensen Roth had five aces, three kills and seven assists. Morgan Geist added an ace, four kills and a block. Jayden Korf had two aces and a kill and Tatum Ditto had two kills for the Longhorns.
The second match Abilene faced the No. 2 seed Concordia. Abilene won in two sets, 25-16, 25-21.
“Concordia has a few really strong hitters,” Koch said. “ Our defense was able to shut their big hitters down. Kaylin Beswick, our libero, always does an exceptional job of digging ball up. She was consistent the whole day for us.”
Walters had three aces, four kills and eight assists, Ditto had three kills and a block, Roth had five kills out of 10 sets, nine assists, Korf added an ace, and Geist had two aces and five kills.
AMS advanced to the semi-finals to meet Wamego. The longhorns defeated the No. 1 seed Wamego team, 25-9, 25-23.
Geist had two aces and three kills, Walters had two kills and five assists, Roth had five kills and five assists and Ditto added an ace.
In the championship match Abilene faced Concordia. Concordia won the first set 25-20 but Abilene came back to win the second set 25-21. Concordia won the final set 25-23, but it was a double elimination tournament.
Brett Short had two aces and three kills, Jensen an ace, seven kills and eight assists, Walters three aces, 13 assists and four kills, Geist had four kills and two aces and Ditto added three kills.
“The girls did a great job shaking off the loss and coming back to face Concordia one last time,” Koch said. “They were able to win the championship in two sets, 25-13,25-23.
Walters had 10 assists and two kills, Ditto had three kills, Roth six kills and eight assists, Korf two aces and three kills and Geist had four kills.
“These girls were so fun to coach this year,” Koch said. “Not only are they talented, but they are all great girls with great attitudes and huge hearts. Dorian and I are excited to watch the girls in high school and are expecting them to fight for a state championship.”
The 7th grade team remained undefeated on the season after winning their NCKL bracket. The 8th grade B team won the Minneapolis tournament Saturday.
