The Chapman Fighting Irish football team out rushed the Concordia Panthers for a 27-21 North Central Kansas League victory Friday.
The Irish running back combination of seniors Robert Walsh and Logan Lexow combined for 281 yards rushing against the Panther defense. Walsh had 188 yards on 18 carries and three touchdowns. Logan Lexow added 93 yards on 15 carries.
The Irish took the lead in the game on a 10-yard pass from Bryce Winters to Gavin Canaday in the first quarter. Winters was two-for-five on the night for 16 yards and the touchdown to Canaday.
Chapman had a 21-14 lead at the break following touchdown runs by Walsh, a five-yard score, and a 35-yard touchdown run and a two-point conversion.
The Panthers took the lead in the third quarter on a 21-yard run by junior running back Drake Hake and a Logan Higbee extra-point kick.
Walsh returned the ensuing kickoff 97 yards for an Irish touchdown. The extra point attempt failed and the Irish led 27-21 going into the fourth quarter.
Neither team reached the end zone in the final period and Chapman held on for the six-point win.
The victory takes the Irish to 2-4 and 2-2 in the NCKL. They will host the 3-3 Abilene Cowboys Friday. The Cowboys have a 3-1 NCKL record on the year.
Fridays game will be the final league game of the season and the start of district play for the two teams.
