The Chapman Fighting Irish tennis team concluded its regular season by winning the Abilene Invitational Tuesday.
“We had another strong team performance Tuesday as we captured yet another team title,” Chapman Coach Derek Berns said. “This win is our sixth out of eight meets this season. We placed three out of four entries in the championship match and all three won to secure a first place team title.”
Briana Elliott, the Irish No. 2 singles player, went 4-0 on the day. Both Irish doubles teams finished the day undefeated also.
Brittany Duer and Jessie Heiman played as the No. 1 doubles team and Carlie Phillips and Brittni Atkinson combined for the No. 2 doubles team for the tournament.
“Atkinson stepped in for Katy Fink for this tournament as Katy was out of meets, and played awesome to win the meet,” Berns said.
Chapman’s No. 1 singles player Rachel Sutter went 2-2 in the tournament to place fifth.
“I’m especially proud of the way our No. 2 doubles performed, playing together for the first time this season,” Berns said. “Katy Fink our normal No. 2 doubles player, was out of meets and we were able to plug in Brittni, who really stepped up and played very good tennis to earn first place. When you can fill in a spot with a girl who hasn’t had much varsity experience this year, and win first place out of eight teams, it shows the depth that we are continuing to work and develop each day.”
“I’m excited about the preparation time where we can fine tune some things to be playing at our best Friday at regionals,” Berns said.
