The Abilene Cowboys junior varsity and freshman team combined to defeat the Wamego junior varsity 42-6 Monday in Abilene, a game that was originally scheduled for Wamego.
The Cowboys got the offense working early in the first period against the Red Raiders as Colton Liby ran the ball effectively setting up a 27-yard pass from Ryan LaCombe to Jared Rimmel to the 3 yard line. Trey Bender scored for the Cowboys on the next play. LaCombe found Keegun Gose for the two-point conversion to give the Cowboys an 8-0 lead.
Hayden Funston forced a Red Raider fumble on Wamego’s first play from scrimmage following the kick-off and Brandon Goodale recovered at the Wamego 9.
Liby found the end zone from five yards out, but the Cowboys failed on the two-point conversion to make the score at the end of the first quarter 14-0.
The second quarter saw both teams exchange possessions until LaCombe found Bender on a 57-yard touchdown pass. The Cowboys increased their lead to 20-0 after the point-after attempt failed.
Dylan Holt sacked the Wamego quarterback to end a Red Raider drive at the end of the first half.
The third quarter saw a fired up Cowboy defense with Bender sacking the quarterback to end their first drive. The Cowboy following drive stalled and they were forced to punt but the defense was swarming again with Gehrig Gessinger recording back-to-back sacks forcing another Red Raider punt.
The Cowboys took over at the Wamego 40 and Parker Base took the next two handoffs and found the end zone from 29-yards out on his second carry of the game. Rimmel ran in the two-point conversion to give the Cowboys a 28-0 lead at the end of three quarters.
The final quarter of the game saw the AHS freshman play the remainder of the game.
Wamego scored its first touchdown of the game early in the fourth on a two-yard touchdown pass and completed the two-point conversion.
Ryan Wilson took over as quarterback for Abilene and completed his first pass of the game to Colby Korf for a 21-yard gain. Base ran the ball for a 29-yard touchdown and Wilson found Korf for the two-point conversion.
Wamego came out passing following the Abilene score and Michael Anguiano tipped the ball into the air and Sam Burt returned the interception to the Red Raider 17.
Wilson scored from the 8-yard line and point after attempt failed.
Wamego added a late touchdown drive and completed the two-point conversion.
