The AHS and AMS cross country teams did well at the Beloit Invitational on Thursday.
“We had some personal bests on a very warm and windy day,” Abilene coach Troy Emig said. “As we get deeper into the season, we have to continue to run closer together as a team.”
The AMS Longhorn runners placed first in both the boys and girls 1600-meter run.
The AHS girls’ varsity team finished third in the eight-team meet. The Cowgirls had five runners place in the top 40 of the meet.
Audrey Berkland led the Cowgirls finishing 12th, 18:12; Maggie Brooks, 18th, 18:31; Mallory Schardein, 29th, 19:14; Malorie Unruh, 32, 19:32 and Maddie Wildman, 40th, 20:06.
The AHS boys’ varsity team finished fourth out of 14 teams in the 3K run.
Andrew Schwarting led the Cowboys with a 5th place finish in 17:50; Erik Hageman, 12th, 18:31; Brendan Dalton, 34th, 19:42; Justin Carroll, 38th, 19:54; Brendan Barnes, 42nd, 19:58 and Chad Beetch, 43rd, 20:00.
The Longhorns dominated the runners in the Middle School division as the combined 7th and 8th grade girls team placed eight of the 15 finalists in the girls 1600 meter run.
Sydney Burton led the Longhorns with a fourth place finish in 6:36; Meagan Anguiano, 6th, 6:51; Harley Leatherman, 7th, 6:53; Bailey Emig, 10th, 7:10; Ivy Tompkins, 12th, 7:16; Faith Meuli, 13th, 7:24; Allie Hiatt, 14th, 7:31 and Grace Griffith, 15th, 7:50.
Ben Wright led the Longhorn boys with a second place finish in 5:22; Austin Wuthrow, 6th, 6:12; Braydan Mohn, 7th, 6:28; Trevor Casteel, 8th, 6:34; Lucas Cook, 9th, 6:35; Kyler Schardien, 10th, 6:38; Braydon Surritte, 11th, 6:54; Jackson Welsh, 12th, 7:07; Nick Wright, 13th, 7:20; Grant Weishaar, 15th, 7:37; Brandon Corder, 16th, 7:46; Travis Luthi, 17th, 7:51 and Phillip Hayes, 18th, 9:22.
“It’s always nice to get some medals at all levels on both the boys and girls teams,” Emig said.
The cross-country teams travel to Ellsworth on Oct. 8 before returning to Abilene to host the North Central Kansas League meet Oct. 17.
