The Chapman Lady Irish placed second in the Smoky Valley Invitational Monday in Lindsborg.
This was a very big meet with eight teams playing all bracket play,” Coach Derek Berns said. “We played well and received second place as a team out of a field of eight teams where there were multiple state ranked team playing.”
Chapman’s singles players Rachel Sutter, 2-2, finished in sixth place and Briana Elliott, 2-2, finished eleventh.
In doubles, Brittany Duer and Jessie Heiman, 3-1, placed second in the tournament. Katy Fink and Carlie Phillips went 1-3 to place eighth.
“Our girls played well all day as this was our toughest meet of the year with multiple state caliber players and teams,” Berns said. To finish second as a team in a field like this is outstanding. However, we aren’t satisfied or done accomplishing our goals yet and will get back to work to get even better everyday.”
“Our No. 1 doubles team of Brittany Duer and Jessie Heiman continue to play great tennis as they had some big wins today en route to the championship match,“ Berns added. “The whole team was steady today and continues to improve everyday and we hope a competitive meet like this prepares us even more for regionals coming up.”
