The No. 2 doubles team of Carlie Phillips and Katy Fink went 3-0, claiming first place to lead the Chapman Lady Irish tennis team to win the Hillsboro Invitational Tennis Tournament Thursday.
There were eight teams at the tournament and each player played three matches of bracket play tennis.
Chapman edged out the No. 1 ranked 3A team Wichita Independent for team points 59-58. Towanda-Circle was third with 53 points; Hutch Trinity 37 points, Hillsboro 23 points, Douglas 19 points, Nickerson 16 points and Wichita Collegiate had 14 points to round out the scoring.
“I thought we played very well considering the conditions of the day,” Coach Derek Berns said. “We played in 20-30 mph winds and it didn’t effect how our girls performed at all.”
Individually for the Irish Rachel Sutter, No. 1, singles player, went 2-1 and finished third place in the meet.
Chapman’s No. 2 singles player Briana Elliott went 2-1 to finish in second place.
Brittany Duer and Jessie Heiman, Chapman’s No. 1 doubles team, finished in second place with a 2-1 record on the day. They lost in the Finals Match 8-6 to a Top 5 state doubles team from Wichita Independent.
“We are gaining that mental toughness aspect that is so important in tennis and I’m excited about the future of this team. We continue to perform at a high level, meet in and meet out, and we are working very hard towards accomplishing our season goals.”
“This was a fantastic meet that sent a message that we can compete with anyone,” Berns said. “We beat out the No. 1 ranked team in 3A, Wichita Independent for the team title. This should give our girls more confidence heading into the league and regional meets.”
