GYPSUM -- The Abilene High School cross-country team continued to improve at the Southeast of Saline Invitational meet Tuesday.
The AHS boys’ team placed second as a team with 91 teams points behind Hesston with 85 points.
“We had several individuals who really stepped up their performance,” Abilene Coach Troy Emig said.
Andrew Schwarting finished seventh in the boys 5K run with a time of 18:22.53. Brendan Barnes came in 12th place in 18:53.31. Erik Hageman finished 19th with a time of 19:24.67 and Justin Carroll was 23rd in 19:29.62.
Rounding out the AHS boys finishers were Brendon Dalton, 31st, in 19:49.37, Tyler Schiffner, 34th, 19:53.03 and Chad Beetch, 50th 20:46.68.
“The boys are beginning to run as a team. This resulted in their 2nd place finish,” Emig said.
The AHS girls had five runners place in the top 50 of the 4K run to earn fifth place as a team.
Maggie Brooks finished 24th at 18:32.40, Maddie Wildman was 27th in-- 18:46.38. Audrey Berkland, 41st, 19:31.17, Malorie Unruh, 44th, 19:37.93 and Mallory Schardien, 48th at 20:07.38 finished for the Cowgirls.
The Cowboy junior varsity team placed second in the meet.
Runners for AHS were Rogan Tokach, 9th, 20:55.57, Isaac Wright, 17th, 21:37.37, Alec Hoover, 18th, 21:38.78, Caleb Stuber, 26th, 22:51.51, Bucky Hayes, 43rd, 24:33.86, Cameron Haaga, 55th, 25:59.46 and Cole Hiatt, 56th, 26:08.09.
Running the junior varsity girls 4K run for Abilene were Miah Meuli, 5th, 20:12.63, Samantha Rutter, 11th, 21:03.91, Shelby Mascareno, 14, 21:35.36, and Raygen Longnecker, 18, 22:52.18.
The AMS Longhorns participating in the event for the 8th grade girl’s 3200-meter run were Harley Leatherman, 21st, and Allie Hiatt, 34th.
The 8th grade boys were led by Ben Wright finishing fourth, Braydon Mohn, 39th, Trevor Casteel, 40th, Kyler Schardein, 41st, Chris Davies, 43rd, and Phillip Hayes at 55th.
Seventh grade girls running a 1600 - meter run were Abby Barnes, 5th, Sydney Burton, 13th, Megan Anguiano, 17th, Ivy Tompkins, 33rd, Faith Meuli, 35th, and Grace Griffith. The seventh grade girls were awarded the second place team award.
Austin Wuthrow’s, 14th place finish led the Longhorn 7th grade boys in their 1600 meter run. Lucas Cook, 17th, Braydon Surritte, 19th, Jackson Welsh, 32nd, Grant Weishaar, 43rd, and Travis Luthi, 46th helped the team win the fourth place team award.
“I’m excited about the way we are progressing as the season goes,” Emig said. “We need to continue to improve every day.”
The Cross Country next runs Oct. 3rd at Beloit.
